Wanderer

by Ruth Acuff

/

about

This song was inspired by the painting “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” by Caspar David Friedrich, which shows a person standing on a precipice above a landscape of mountains and trees obscured by fog. When I saw it, I felt a kinship with the person in the painting - having come to many points in life when the path forward wasn’t clear - even from a higher vantage point. Though it can be lonely and confusing, there is also a harsh beauty to the mystery and hidden potential.

lyrics

Wanderer above the sea of fog
Gazing out at the land upon
Which you must tread forward
Oh no wing can lift you above

With each step, you climb
Sandstone, quartz, and lime
Through the cloud you see
Harsh beauty

It’s a blinding light
It’s a starless night
If you squint you’ll see
You must want it to be to see

Lift your eyes above
Raven and the dove
Sharing the same sky
Lovely sight

Mountaineer in a misty land
Time has twisted all your plans
Wind in hair, and stick in hand
Your spirit lifts you above
